"Through My Eyes" 2nd Annual Juvenile Justice Art Show Presented by the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance The Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance is currently organizing an art show of work of kids involved the juvenile justice system. The show will be the 2nd annual juvenile justice art show, as last year's show was displayed at the Arts Council of Greater New Haven in January 2009. (If you are interested in learning more about last year's show, please contact the Alliance for pictures, press clippings, etc.) This year's theme is "Through My Eyes" and is designed to give kids the freedom to express themselves through their art. "Through My Eyes" could mean how they see themselves, the world, their friends / family, the system, or wherever else their creative minds take them! The show aims to showcase the talent of these youth, as well as work to break down stereotypes and show that these kids are far more than "delinquent" kids. By displaying their art, participants will have an opportunity to show themselves as creative, talented people who have hopes, fears, and possibilities, This exhibit will also be a forum to bring attention to the juvenile justice system and open up conversation justice issues with people who may not have otherwise been exposed to discussion about at-risk youth. In addition, the Alliance is aiming to fully involve kids in the show by bringing youth to the reception if possible, and also will put their work up for sale. The proceeds will go directly to the kids (outside of a small gallery commission). This will provide a way for kids to see a tangible, positive reward for their efforts and good work. The Alliance's art show hopes to build on last year's success an be an inspiring example of how to help young people express themselves, be creative instead of destructive, and engage the wider community in the lives and dreams of these young people. * The show will feature work from kids at all stages of the juvenile justice system, from pre-adjudication to residential and community-based programs to detention. The Alliance will be accepting artwork on all mediums (drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc.) We ask that the artists please provide either a title or one sentence statement on what the piece means to them. The deadline for submission of artwork is August 15. Additionally, the Alliance will begin collecting poetry and writings from system-involved youth to publish on our website and listserv a monthly basis.
