Start Early To Bridge Gap

It is striking that the Aug. 29 article on SAT scores [Connecticut section,
"SAT Achievement Gap Stays Wide"] does not explore the issue of why the
achievement gap in Connecticut, which begins early in the academic careers of too
many children, continues into the 11th and 12th grades.

We have Connecticut Mastery Test data for grades 3 through 8, CAPT data for
grade 10 and SAT data for grades 11 and 12. All reveal a huge shortfall in
the performance of African American and Latino students in Connecticut, across
age and over time.

The issue is not how to get around the SAT scores, but how to help our
students achieve better academic performance - beginning early in their academic
careers.
