  Farm Bill Moves to Senate Floor - Calls Needed to Improve Food Stamps & Emergency Food (TEFAP)

  3. Call your Senators toll-free at (800) 826-9624 to support floor amendments improving Food Stamp and TEFAP provisions. Your calls can mean victory for amendments!

  MESSAGE FOR YOUR SENATORS: Please support amendments on the Senate floor that provide additional funding to strengthen the Food Stamp and TEFAP programs. Specifically tell them that you want to see further increases in the Food Stamp benefit beyond the Senate Agriculture Committee's $12 monthly minimum (current $10 minimum has not changed in 30 years). Also urge them to update current rules to expand access to benefits. No one should be hungry. Finally, let your Senator know that you want the Food Stamp Program to be more accessible to those who need it most.

  LATEST ACTION: On Oct. 25th, the Senate Agriculture Committee voted out the Food and Energy Security Act of 2007 ("Farm Bill"). The bill provides $4.2 billion over five years in new funding for nutrition programs of which $3.2 billion is for improvements in Food Stamp program benefits and accessibility, program operations, and funding for TEFAP. The latest summary and legislative language of the Committee's Farm Bill are available online at http://agriculture.senate.gov (click on 2007 Farm Bill button for the latest information).

  The Senate is now poised to take up the Farm Bill as early as next week. At stake are additional investments in the Food Stamp Program and TEFAP. Now is the time to urge your Senators to support floor amendments that build on the improvements in the Senate Agriculture Committee's nutrition title.

  Call your Senators toll-free at (800) 826-9624. You'll hear a brief explanation of what's at stake, and will then be asked for your home phone and zip code. You will choose which Senator you'd like to contact first and will be connected directly to their office. Once connected, relay the above message.

  The toll-free line has been made available by AARP, and will be available throughout the Senate consideration of the Farm Bill. Join the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) in spreading this toll-free number and message.
