     Parenting Education Graduation Requirement 
   
  KEY INFORMATION:
    
   The description of parenting education endorsed by the Education Department is as follows: Parenting education provides youth with the knowledge and skills needed to be responsible parents and caring citizens. 
    
   New York State Regulations (Part 100) require all students entering ninth grade in the fall of 2001 and thereafter to receive parenting education prior to their graduation. 
    
   The requirement can be found in Part 100 of the Regulation of the Commissioner of Education 100.5(a)(3)(vi), which states: Learning standards in the area of parenting shall be attained through either the health or family and consumer sciences programs or a separate course. 
    
   The New York State Parenting Education Standards are provided here: 
      Standard I:    Roles and Responsibilities
Students will understand roles and responsibilities of parenting.
  Standard II:   Human Growth and Development
Students will understand human growth and development of the child and parent.
      Standard III: Support Systems and Services Students will be able to identify traits of a healthy family and use support systems and services when necessary.
    
   The New York State Parenting Education Standards are based on the National Parenting Standards which may be obtained by calling 1-800-248-7701 ext. 543. They are part of the National FACS Standards binder; a fee is charged. 
    
   Education Law 804b (1993) authorizes schools to include, as an integral part of family and consumer sciences or health education, instruction regarding child development and parental skills and responsibilities.
