I see the State of Connecticut has once again taken the bull by the horns.
Of course the problem is they never seem to grab the right bull. Now maybe
it's just me and I'm not afraid of teen-agers, but if I wanted to develop
more effective ways to convince teens to drive safer, I think I might talk
to some teens. No offence to the many elected officials and heads of
departments of the state but, I'm guessing that if they haven't managed so
far, I have doubts putting them all in a room together will make any
difference.

The governor, following the accident-related deaths of seven teens over the
past four months, today announced formation of a task force that will look
for more effective ways to convince teens to drive safer.
Named to co-chair the task force are: Robert M. Ward, commissioner of the
state Department of Motor Vehicles, and Dr. J. Robert Galvin, commissioner
of the state Department of Public Health.
Representatives from law enforcement, insurance, medicine, driver education
and school administration will serve on the panel, along with officials from
the following state agencies: transportation, public health, public safety
and motor vehicles.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell, in a prepared statement, said the state must act more
aggressively to boost safety awareness among young drivers.
Rell has asked for short-term recommendations over the next two months, and
long-term strategies over the next half-year.
The governor called on the panel to examine the effectiveness of penalties
associated with unsafe driving by teens, and to formulate new awareness
strategies -- aimed at both teens and parents.
Galvin said state officials must continually strive to make communities
safer through a combination of education, awareness and new laws.

"The people of Connecticut, and history, will judge us by whether we
accepted our stewardship simply to preserve the comfortable status quo or
whether we seized it with boldness of purpose. I, for one, am emboldened."
