30 Instruments Now Available to Schools Today, 30 instruments were posted on the website. They are available free to public and private school music programs in Connecticut. All instruments are clean and in excellent playing condition. This is due to the first-rate work done by our independent repair technicians, who have been very generous with their time. We encourage all school music teachers and administrators to apply for these instruments. Applications should be received by Horns For Kids no later than Tuesday, February 27. We have extended the application period one extra week due to winter recess. You may see the list and download the application at our website at: http://hornsforkids.org/id76.html
Low Brass Instruments Needed We are in need of low brass instruments such as trombones, baritone horns, tubas or sousaphones. If you happen to run across any of these instruments, please refer the owners to us. We’d like to award more of these to schools with the next group of instruments. The value of all donated instruments is tax deductible.
Students at Lyme-Old Lyme HS Raise Funds Last December, a Civics class at Lyme-Old Lyme High School held a benefit concert to raise funds for Horns For Kids. The students organized the concert on their own initiative and raised $574 dollars. We visited the class in January. Horns For Kids is very grateful to these students for supporting music education for deserving CT schools. See complete story at: http://www.hornsforkids.org/id87.html
State Arts Coordinator Returns We are thrilled at the return of our CT State Arts Coordinator, Scott Shuler. Dr. Shuler has returned to the CT Department of Education after a one year absence. During that time, the SDE did not fill the position, which left a great void for teachers and arts advocates throughout the State. We are extremely fortunate to have the benefit of Dr. Shuler’s work and expertise in Connecticut. CT SDE Arts website: http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2618&q=320834
Cash Grants to Schools We have not yet determined if we’ll be able to award cash grants this spring. Our Ronald McDonald House Charities grant has expired, so we’re presently being very frugal with our funds. Instrument repair and purchase of incidental items like mouthpieces, bows, etc. is a priority. Please monitor the website frequently to check on availability of cash grants.
Tell Others About Horns For Kids You are our best form of advertisement. In the last three and a half years, H4K has supported over 100 schools with either instruments or cash grants. Perhaps your school has benefited. Please pass the word about Horns For Kids to colleagues, friends, parents, business people. The more support we receive from the public — the more we can support school music programs in Connecticut. Though CT is an affluent state, there are many schools that are in urgent need of help for music students. Please tell others to visit our website for more information on how to help.
